What VEX Robotics Competition is
The VEX V5 Robotics Competition is the biggest robotics league in the world measured by number of teams. Its distinguishing feature is tournament density: instead of two or three events a year, VEX teams can compete most weekends of the season, iterating their robot between events. That feedback loop makes it the fastest way to improve as a robotics team, and the smaller kit-based robots keep costs well below FRC.
How the competition works
The 2026-27 V5RC game is Override, played on a 12-foot square field. Two alliances of two teams each compete in matches of a 15-second autonomous period followed by a 1 minute 45 second driver-controlled period. Teams also keep an Engineering Notebook, which feeds judged awards.
Eligibility notes
Separate middle school and high school divisions. VEX IQ serves elementary and middle school with a simpler kit.
How to register
- Register the team with the REC Foundation through RobotEvents.
- Order the V5 competition kit and the season's game element kit.
- Sign up for local tournaments on RobotEvents. Enter early in the season even if the robot is unfinished; the iteration is the point.
- Keep an engineering notebook from the first meeting, since it is judged and cannot be reconstructed later.

Frequently asked questions
How does VEX differ from FIRST?
The biggest practical difference is tournament frequency. VEX teams can compete most weekends and improve the robot between events, while FIRST teams typically attend two or three events a season. VEX also uses a standard kit, which lowers cost and levels the field but limits fabrication freedom.
Can a small team compete?
Yes. VEX teams are commonly three to six students, which makes it viable where a large FRC team is not.
