- Several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars per teamFIRST does not publish a single national figure on the pages checked. A third-party guide gives annual team registration at $325, and a regional partner estimates a realistic rookie team starter budget of $3,800 to $5,500 once the kit, parts and event fees are included. Treat the registration fee as the smallest part of the cost. The robot kit is reusable year to year, so later seasons are cheaper. Grants and financial support are widely available: several regional partners run funding programmes, including one aimed at middle-school and under-resourced teams.

Regional bodies add their own earlier dates: one state set a single qualifier payment deadline of 27 November 2026, and several use an event preferencing system with information sent to registered teams at the end of September.

What FIRST Tech Challenge is
FTC teams build a robot roughly the size of a large toolbox to compete in a new game each season. It runs on the same annual rhythm as the FIRST Robotics Competition but at a fraction of the cost and space requirement, which makes it the practical option for a school starting from nothing. Programming is in Java or Blocks, so a team with no prior experience can field a working robot in its first season.
How the competition works
Teams design, build, program and operate a classroom-scale robot to play a floor game in an alliance format, with an autonomous period followed by driver control in two-on-two matches. Robots are built from a reusable platform and coded in a graphical language or Java. Teams also raise funds, build a team brand and do community outreach, which feed judged awards. Teams competing for judged awards prepare a Team Portfolio of up to 15 pages.
Eligibility notes
Teams are capped at fifteen students. Community, home school and club teams are common alongside school teams.
How to register
- Check whether a team already exists at your school or nearby.
- If not, an adult registers a team on firstinspires.org and orders the robot kit.
- Apply for rookie grants through your regional FIRST partner.
- Start the engineering notebook on day one. It is a judged deliverable and cannot be reconstructed at the end of the season.

Frequently asked questions
Should a new team start with FTC or FRC?
FTC, in almost every case. The robot is smaller, the cost is a fraction, it needs far less space and tooling, and the season structure teaches the same habits. Many teams run FTC for a few years before adding FRC.
How important is the engineering notebook?
Very. It is a judged deliverable and it underpins the Inspire Award, which is the highest honour in the programme. Teams that start it in week one consistently outperform teams that write it the night before.
