Eligible grades
K-12, community college and university students. Five classes: SCOUT for elementary through high school entry level, NAVIGATOR for middle schoolers with robotics experience and high schoolers new to robotics, RANGER for middle and high school students with solid robotics experience, PIONEER for first-time college and university teams, and EXPLORER at advanced university level.
An important restriction on the top class: high school students competing in MATE ROV for the first time are NOT eligible for EXPLORER. High schoolers may enter EXPLORER only if they previously placed in the top 50% at the international event in EXPLORER with at least half the prior team returning, or placed in the top three in RANGER.

Individual or team
Team · More than one team per school or instructor may be permitted, but a student may only be on one team, and this applies ACROSS classes: a NAVIGATOR competitor cannot also compete on a RANGER team. Where a regional event cannot host multiple teams from one school, schools are encouraged to hold an in-school run-off.

Entry cost
A few hundred to a few thousand dollars in materialsRegistration fees are set per regional event and were not published centrally. The larger cost is equipment: MATE sells ROV building kits for RANGER and PIONEER teams at roughly $850 or $1,260 depending on model. MATE advises teams to consider whether they have sufficient financial resources before registering, and to secure access to a pool or comparable water source deep and clear enough to test in.

What MATE ROV Competition is

MATE ROV asks teams to design and build an underwater remotely operated vehicle and then complete mission tasks modelled on real ocean engineering work: inspecting pipelines, sampling habitats, servicing subsea equipment. Teams operate as simulated companies, producing a technical documentation package and delivering an engineering presentation alongside the pool run, which makes it unusually close to actual engineering practice.

How the competition works

Teams operate as simulated start-up companies. Alongside piloting the ROV through timed mission tasks, they submit engineering and technical reports, create marketing displays or posters, and deliver sales-style presentations to panels of working professionals.

Eligibility notes

The SCOUT and NAVIGATOR classes are aimed at students new to the competition, including middle school teams. RANGER is the main high school class.

How to register

  1. Read the current year's mission manual, which is published free and defines everything you will be scored on.
  2. Pick the class that matches your experience. Starting in SCOUT or NAVIGATOR is normal and recommended.
  3. Register with your regional coordinator, found through the official site.
  4. Build, test in water early, and prepare the technical documentation package alongside the vehicle rather than afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a pool?

You need water access for testing, though many teams use a school pool, a local community pool or even large tanks for early testing. Competition runs happen at the regional venue's pool.

Is this only for students interested in marine careers?

No, though the industry connection is genuine. The engineering skills, documentation practice and presentation experience transfer to any technical field.
