Eligible grades
Grades 6, 7 and 8 for the main competition. NEW: DiscoverE has opened Future City High School to all high schools for grades 9 to 12, after piloting it the previous year.
The high school division works differently: there are NO regional competitions, and teams submit all deliverables directly to Future City National. The previous listing covered only the middle school programme.

Individual or team
Team · A regional team consists of three presenting students from the same school, an engineer-mentor and a teacher sponsor, though the minimum team size is three students and more may work on the project. Regions set their own limits on how many teams a school may bring: one region allows up to five teams at the morning preliminary round.

Entry cost
$25 per school.Model materials are recycled by design, so the build cost is low. Some regional coordinators offer further discounts to member districts.
Registration deadline
Set locally, not published as a single national date Set by each region, and they vary widely. One region's registration deadline is 31 October. Media waiver and medical release forms for every student are due separately, at the end of January in the most recent cycle. Find your own region's dates.
Competition dates
Teams work for roughly four months from September. Regional Competitions are held in January; one region's 2027 regional is 23 January 2027. The Finals are in Washington, D.C. in February, as a featured event of National Engineers Week.
Difficulty
Some preparation neededYou will want a few weeks of targeted practice. Most motivated students place respectably.
Prizes
Trips, prizes and special awardsRegional winners receive an all-expenses trip to the Finals for the official team of three students, educator and mentor. A practical warning from the organiser: travel must be finalised within seven days of the regional competition or the team may forfeit the free trip, and travel itineraries must be approved by 5:00 p.m. ET the same day they are received. Anyone beyond the official five pays their own way.

What Future City is

Future City asks middle school teams to imagine and design a city set at least a century in the future that solves a specific engineering challenge announced each season. Teams deliver four things: a city built in SimCity, a written essay, a physical scale model constructed from recycled materials on a strict budget, and a presentation to judges. The recycled-materials rule and the low budget cap make it one of the most equitable engineering competitions available.

How the competition works

Four deliverables: a city essay, a physical city model built from recycled materials that must include at least one moving part, a project plan, and a presentation with a question-and-answer session before judges. One region runs a 7-minute presentation and a 10-minute Q&A. The 2026-27 theme is Fire Resilient Future: design a city that can prevent, protect against and recover from urban wildfires.

  2. Recruit an engineer mentor. DiscoverE can help match one if you do not know an engineer.
  3. Read the season's theme and the four deliverables. Each is scored separately, so a team weak in one area can still place well.
  4. Attend your regional competition in January.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to be good at building models?

The model is one of four scored deliverables alongside the essay, the simulation city and the presentation. A team that writes and presents well can place strongly with a modest model, and the recycled-materials rule with a low spending cap deliberately prevents money from deciding the outcome.

What if we do not know an engineer?

DiscoverE runs mentor matching. Ask when you register; many practising engineers volunteer specifically for this programme.
