Registration deadline
Competition registration closes 24 February 2027. Team Advisors and students must be fully registered and on complete teams by that date. 168 days leftRegistration closing is separate from the Mission Folder submission deadline, which follows in the spring. You cannot join a team after 24 February.

Prizes
US Series EE Savings Bonds awarded per student, at each grade level, and cumulative as you advance. First-place state winners receive a bond worth $500 at purchase and $1,000 at maturity per student; second place $250 and $500. Regional Finalists add a further $500 at purchase, and Regional Winners a further $1,000 at purchase, on top of the state award. National winners have been reported at $10,000 per student at maturity.Teams have historically received US savings bonds at state, regional and national levels, with national winners receiving the largest awards per student. What eCYBERMISSION is

eCYBERMISSION is a free, web-based STEM competition for students in grades 6 to 9. Teams identify a problem in their local community, apply either the scientific method or the engineering design process to address it, and submit their work online. The community focus is the defining feature: judges want a real local problem and evidence you engaged with it, not a laboratory exercise.

How the competition works

Teams choose a problem in their own community and either investigate it using scientific practices or solve it with engineering design, then write it up in a Mission Folder. Each Mission Folder is scored three times by Virtual Judges against a Scientific Inquiry or Engineering Design rubric, and the scores are averaged. Students receive their scores and the judges' written comments afterwards.

Eligibility notes

Open to students in the United States, US territories and Department of Defense schools. An adult team advisor is required.

How to register

  1. Find an adult team advisor, which can be a teacher, parent or community leader.
  2. Register the team on the official site during the autumn window.
  3. Choose a genuine local community problem. Judges consistently reward specificity and evidence of local engagement.
  4. Document everything in the mission folder as you go, then submit online before the late-winter deadline.

Does it cost anything?

No. eCYBERMISSION is free to enter, runs entirely online, and requires no laboratory or materials beyond what your chosen problem needs.

What counts as a community problem?

Something specific and local: water quality in a nearby stream, a traffic hazard at your school, food waste in your cafeteria. Judges reward evidence that you investigated the actual local situation rather than researching the topic in general.
