Eligible grades
Grades K to 12, in four categories: primary K-3, upper elementary 4-6, middle level 7-9, and high school 10-12. The oldest student on a team determines the category, and each category is judged separately.

Individual or team
Team · Teams of 2 to 4 students with a teacher or coach, plus an optional mentor. There are no individual entries. Team members do not have to attend the same school or even live in the same state, and home-schooled students may team up with public school students.

Registration deadline
Projects must be submitted by the coach by 8:00 PM ET on 27 January 2027. 140 days leftThe coach submits, not the student. Note the earlier hour: an 8:00 p.m. cut-off, not midnight. A third-party scholarship site lists 3 February 2027, which matches the previous cycle's date rather than this one, so use NSTA's date.

Prizes
Savings bonds for national winners plus a trip to WashingtonNational winners receive US Series EE Savings Bonds valued at $10,000 at maturity, plus Toshiba technology prizes, with additional awards for second-place teams and regional winners. Finalists are invited to an Awards Weekend in Washington, D.C. Students retain rights to all ideas and products they generate: neither NSTA nor Toshiba will attempt to patent student work.

What ExploraVision is

ExploraVision asks teams to choose an existing technology, research how it works and how it developed, then describe what it could become in twenty years and what would have to happen technically for that to occur. There is no building: the deliverables are a written paper and a set of web pages describing the future technology. That makes it one of the very few engineering competitions with essentially no materials cost.

How the competition works

Teams research an existing technology and envision how it could evolve 10 to 20 years into the future. The entry includes a title, a 150-word abstract, a project description of up to 11 pages, a bibliography, and a five-item technology launch flyer. Semi-finalists then build websites and prototypes. Two finalist phases follow, regional then national.

Eligibility notes

Teams need a teacher advisor. Open to students in the United States and Canada.

How to register

  1. Form a team of two to four students and find a teacher advisor.
  2. Pick a technology you find genuinely interesting; the research load is heavy enough that boredom shows in the writing.
  3. Register and submit online before the winter deadline.
  4. Read the published past winning entries first. They are the clearest possible guide to the expected standard.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to build anything?

No. ExploraVision is entirely written and web-based, which is why it costs nothing to enter and works for schools with no laboratory or workshop.

How technical does the future technology need to be?

Judges look for a plausible chain of reasoning from present technology to the future version, with the required breakthroughs identified and cited. Imagination without a technical path scores poorly; so does a modest extrapolation with no vision.
