What Botball is

Botball teams build two autonomous robots from a standard kit and program them in C or Python to complete a game challenge with no human control at all during a match. That total autonomy is the defining feature: unlike most school robotics leagues there are no drivers, so the competition is decided entirely by the code and the mechanical reliability.

How the competition works

The season opens with a two-day professional development workshop for team leaders, mentors and students, followed by a build period of about seven weeks, then a regional tournament. Teams build an autonomous robot and program it with code they write. Botball Online Project Documentation is a required element that factors into the regional score. Every team gives an on-site presentation at the regional tournament: a maximum of two students present, with no more than 6 minutes to present and 4 minutes of questions.

Is Botball right for you?

Experience needed
Some programming. Botball goes deeper into autonomous code than most school leagues because there is no driver to compensate.

About seven intensive weeks after the workshop.
What you actually do
You write code that must handle everything, because once the match starts nobody can touch the robot. Sensor calibration and failure recovery matter more than in any driver-controlled league.

  • Your team has more programmers than builders
  • You want a shorter, more concentrated season

  • Teams who enjoy driver skill as part of the competition
  • Schools that cannot fund the first-year kit

Common mistakes

  • Testing on one surface under one lighting condition. Autonomous robots fail on small environmental differences and the tournament venue will not match your classroom.
  • Writing code that assumes everything works. Recovery behaviour for a missed sensor reading is what separates finishing runs from stranded robots.

None. Botball robots run entirely autonomously from the moment the match starts, which is the main structural difference from FIRST Tech Challenge and VEX and makes it a much deeper programming exercise.
