How to prepare for National Merit Scholarship Program

The scholarship competition you enter by sitting the PSAT/NMSQT in your junior year, whether you meant to or not.

Where the points actually are

The Selection Index that decides recognition is derived from your PSAT/NMSQT reading, writing and mathematics scores, so preparation is straightforward standardised test practice. What makes this competition unusual is that the threshold is a state-level cutoff you cannot know in advance, which means the sensible strategy is to maximise the score rather than to aim at a target.

01The Selection Index
Recognition depends on this derived score, not the raw total. Understand how it is calculated so you know which sections carry weight.
02Reading and writing
For most students this is where the Selection Index is won or lost, because the mathematics ceiling is easier to reach.
03Mathematics
Content through early algebra and geometry, tested under tight time pressure. Speed matters more than depth.
04The Finalist application
An essay, an academic record and a principal's recommendation. Treat the essay as seriously as a college essay, because the same kind of committee reads it.
05The confirming score
An SAT or ACT score that corroborates your PSAT performance, submitted to the Corporation. Purely administrative and routinely missed.

A study plan that works backwards from the date

  1. Summer before grade 11 Work through official practice tests. College Board and Khan Academy publish full free materials, and the PSAT and SAT overlap heavily enough that preparing for one prepares you for the other.
  2. September of grade 11 Confirm with your counsellor that you are registered for the October PSAT/NMSQT. Do not assume it is automatic.
  3. October of grade 11 Sit the test.
  4. September of grade 12, if notified Complete the Semifinalist application immediately. Book the SAT or ACT for the confirming score if you have not already got one.

Tips that come from the format itself

  • Only the grade 11 sitting enters you into the competition. Earlier sittings are practice.
  • Khan Academy's official free SAT preparation is built with College Board and covers the same content as the PSAT/NMSQT at no cost.
  • Semifinalist cutoffs vary by state by several points, so compare yourself against your own state's history rather than national percentiles.
  • If you are prevented from taking the test by illness or emergency, contact the Corporation. There is an alternate entry route and students routinely do not know it exists.
