Where the points actually are

Quiz bowl is the most tractable knowledge competition there is, because the distribution of topics is published and enormous archives of past questions are freely available. Improvement comes from reading past questions systematically and from teams dividing the canon so no subject is unowned.

Topic breakdown

01The distribution: NAQT publishes what proportion of questions come from literature, history, science, fine arts and the rest. Study time should follow that distribution, not your personal interests.
02Specialisation: Four players cannot each know everything. Strong teams assign subject areas so that every category has an owner, and cover the gaps deliberately.
03Pyramidal buzzing: Questions get easier as they go. Learning when to buzz, given what you know and what your opponent is likely to know, is a distinct skill from knowing the answer.
04Bonus conversion: Bonuses are answered as a team and are where matches are actually won. Teams that discuss efficiently outperform teams with faster buzzers.

A study plan that works backwards from the date

Off-season Read past question packets by category. Free archives exist and reading questions is itself the most efficient study method, because it teaches you what gets asked.
Early season Assign categories across the team. Every player takes primary responsibility for two or three areas plus a shared general pool.
Mid season Play as many local tournaments as possible. Buzzer instinct only develops in real matches.
Before nationals Drill bonus conversion as a team. Practise the discussion protocol: who speaks, who decides, how long you take.

Tips that come from the format itself

Reading old packets is the single most efficient study activity. The same clues recur constantly.
Study the published distribution rather than your favourite subjects. Unowned categories cost matches.
Bonuses are where matches are decided. A team that converts bonuses well beats a team with one fast buzzer.
Local tournaments are cheap and frequent. Playing more matches beats studying more books at every level below national.
