NAQT publishes detailed High School Eligibility Rules rather than a simple grade range. A team must come from a single school, defined by default as an accredited institution with a comprehensive programme on one physical campus. The competition year runs 1 August to 31 July. A player may not play both the HSNCT and a post-secondary NAQT championship in the same year regardless of dual-enrolment status, though they may play both the MSNCT and HSNCT. Entry cost
Tournament entry fees plus travel to nationalsThe HSNCT entry fee was not stated on the pages checked; NAQT says the entry fee covers only its own fixed costs, with payment generally due within a week of registration. Separately, NAQT states that most regular-season high school tournaments charge $40 to $100, varying by location, length and amenities. What Quiz Bowl (NAQT HSNCT) is

Quiz bowl is a buzzer-based team competition covering literature, history, science, fine arts, social science, religion, mythology, geography and current events. NAQT runs the High School National Championship Tournament, which teams qualify for through designated tournaments during the season. Because the topic distribution is published and decades of past questions are available, quiz bowl is one of the most systematically studiable competitions in existence.

Eligibility notes

Teams register through a school with a coach. NAQT also runs a middle school national championship.

How to register

  1. Join or start a quiz bowl team at your school with a teacher as coach.
  2. Enter local tournaments, many of which are run by nearby schools and universities and cost very little.
  3. Qualify for nationals at a designated qualifying tournament during the season.
  4. Register the team for the national championship and arrange travel.

How to prepare

Quiz bowl is the most tractable knowledge competition there is, because the distribution of topics is published and enormous archives of past questions are freely available. Improvement comes from reading past questions systematically and from teams dividing the canon so no subject is unowned.

What to study

The distribution
NAQT publishes what proportion of questions come from literature, history, science, fine arts and the rest. Study time should follow that distribution, not your personal interests.
Specialisation
Four players cannot each know everything. Strong teams assign subject areas so that every category has an owner, and cover the gaps deliberately.
Pyramidal buzzing
Questions get easier as they go. Learning when to buzz, given what you know and what your opponent is likely to know, is a distinct skill from knowing the answer.
Bonus conversion
Bonuses are answered as a team and are where matches are actually won. Teams that discuss efficiently outperform teams with faster buzzers.

How do I get better at quiz bowl quickly?

Read past question packets systematically. Free archives contain hundreds of thousands of questions and the same clues recur constantly, so reading questions is more efficient than reading textbooks. Combine that with Protobowl for buzzer practice.

Do I need to know everything?

No. Teams of four specialise, with each player owning two or three subject areas. The published subject distribution tells you exactly what the team collectively needs to cover.
