Preparation guide
How to prepare for AMC 8
A 40-minute, 25-question exam for middle schoolers and the natural first step into contest maths.
Open to beginners · Grade 8 and below
Where the points actually are
AMC 8 preparation is mostly about exposure. The syllabus is small and the questions repeat structural ideas year to year, so working through ten past papers with careful review will move most students from a score around 10 to a score in the high teens.
Topic breakdown
- 01Arithmetic and ratios
- Fractions, percentages, ratios, rates, unit conversion, averages. This is the largest single slice of the exam.
- 02Counting
- Systematic listing, simple combinations, complementary counting, Venn diagrams.
- 03Geometry
- Area and perimeter, angle chasing, similar figures, the Pythagorean theorem, coordinate basics.
- 04Number sense
- Divisibility rules, primes and factorisation, remainders, patterns in sequences.
- 05Logic and word problems
- Translating a paragraph into an equation, working backwards, and spotting the trick in a deliberately confusing setup.
A study plan that works backwards from the date
- Eight weeks out Sit one past AMC 8 untimed to see the format without pressure. Mark it together with an adult and note which questions felt unfamiliar rather than hard.
- Weeks 1 to 4 One past paper per week, timed at 40 minutes. Afterwards, redo every missed problem from scratch without looking at the solution, then read the solution.
- Weeks 5 to 7 Alternate past papers with targeted practice on your weakest topic using Alcumus or MATHCOUNTS handbook problems.
- Final week One paper, then rest. Review the error log only.
Tips that come from the format itself
- There is no guessing penalty on the AMC 8. Answer every single question, even the ones you never read.
- Questions 1 to 12 are where the score is. Getting all of those right already puts you above the median.
- Draw the diagram yourself even when one is given. Redrawing to scale reveals answers on angle and area problems.
- Practise on paper, not on a screen. The real exam has no zoom, no calculator and cramped margins.
