What Math Kangaroo is
Math Kangaroo is the widest-reaching mathematics competition in the world by participation, running in more than 90 countries. In the United States it is open from grade 1 to grade 12, with separate papers for each level. The problems are puzzle-flavoured rather than curriculum-flavoured, which makes it unusually welcoming for younger students and for students who like maths but do not think of themselves as competitive.
How the competition works
Several participation options: in-person at a registered centre, online with proctoring, and self-proctored virtual. Self-proctored participation gives a real score and a ranking range but no official ranking, no gifts and no awards. Public centres are open to students from any grade and any school.
Eligibility notes
Levels are paired by grade (1 and 2, 3 and 4, and so on). This is the only major contest on this site open to primary school students.

Frequently asked questions
How young can you start Math Kangaroo?
Grade 1. It is the only major mathematics competition in this directory that accepts primary school students, and the level 1 and 2 paper is designed for six and seven year olds.
Is Math Kangaroo harder than the AMC 8?
No. Math Kangaroo is generally more accessible and more puzzle-oriented. Students often use it as a first competition before moving to AMC 8 or MATHCOUNTS.
Do I need a school to register me?
No. Math Kangaroo registration is done directly by a parent or student through the official site, choosing a nearby registered centre. This makes it easier to access than the AMC.
