Prizes
The national first-place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship, the T.C. Selman Memorial Scholarship, paid directly to their American university, college or vocational/technical school. Each Department (state) first-place winner receives a scholarship and an all-expenses-paid Parade of Winners trip to Washington, D.C. in March.Scholarships are awarded at post, district, state and national level. The national first-place award has historically been in the tens of thousands of dollars. Confirm current amounts with the VFW.

What Voice of Democracy is

Voice of Democracy asks students to write and record a three-minute audio essay responding to an annual patriotic theme. Entries are judged first at local Veterans of Foreign Wars post level, then district and state, with state winners competing nationally for scholarships. The audio format is unusual and rewards students who can write for the ear as well as the page.

How the competition works

Write and record an audio essay on the year's patriotic theme. The recording must be no shorter than 3 minutes and no longer than 5 minutes, within 5 seconds. It must be in your own voice and in English, with no music, singing, poetry or sound effects. You must be the sole author, and the entry form states that inappropriate use of ChatGPT or other AI tools is not allowed. Essays must be anonymous: do not include your name, address, school or anything revealing your race, sex, religion or national origin. Judging is content 35 points, delivery 35 points, originality 30 points. Hearing and speech impaired students should contact the national office for special instructions.

Eligibility notes

Open to students in the United States and to dependents of US military personnel overseas. A companion programme, Patriot's Pen, runs for grades 6 to 8 as a written essay.

How to register

  1. Find a participating VFW post near you through the VFW site.
  2. Read the current year's theme, which is announced well in advance.
  3. Write an essay that runs three to five minutes when read aloud, then record it as audio.
  4. Submit the recording and entry form to the local post by the deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need recording equipment?

No. A phone recording is acceptable as long as the audio is clear. Judges score content and delivery, not production quality.

Where do I submit?

To a participating local VFW post, not to the national organisation. Use the post locator on the VFW site, and contact the post early since some set internal deadlines ahead of the national one.
