How to prepare for Science Olympiad
A 23-event team tournament covering everything from anatomy to bridge building, run at invitational, regional, state and national level.
Competitive · Division B is grades 6 to 9. Division C is high school. Division A is an elementary programme for K to 6.
Where the points actually are
Science Olympiad rewards specialisation. You are not preparing for a general science exam; you are preparing for two or three named events whose rules manual tells you exactly what is examinable. Students who read the rules manual carefully and build a well-organised binder for their events routinely beat students who simply know more science.
Topic breakdown
- 01Reading the rules manual
- Each event has a page in the season's rules manual specifying the topics, the permitted resources, and the scoring. Everything examinable is in there. This is the single most underused resource in the competition.
- 02Study events
- For events allowing a binder or note sheet, the artefact you build is most of the score. Organise for retrieval speed under time pressure, not for completeness.
- 03Lab events
- Practical technique, measurement and error analysis. Practise the actual procedures rather than reading about them.
- 04Build events
- Devices are constrained by strict specifications. Build early, test destructively, and build a second one. The most common failure is a device that has never been tested to breaking point.
- 05Event pairing
- You and your partner should have complementary strengths and a division of labour agreed before the tournament, not during it.
A study plan that works backwards from the date
- September Read the season's rules manual for your events, twice. Write down every topic listed and mark what you already know.
- October and November Build your binder or note sheet and start filling gaps. For build events, complete a first prototype now so you have time to fail.
- December and January Take past tests from event-specific archives under timed conditions with your partner. Refine the binder based on what you could not find fast enough.
- Invitational season Compete at invitationals purely as practice. They are the only realistic rehearsal for tournament day pacing.
- Regional and beyond Fix the specific weaknesses invitationals exposed. For build events, bring spare parts and a repair kit.
Tips that come from the format itself
- The rules manual defines the scope of every event. Reading it properly is worth more than any textbook.
- For binder events, index and tab it. Points are lost to slow lookup far more than to missing content.
- Build events are won by teams who test to destruction weeks early. A device that works once at home is not a finished device.
- Choose events strategically. A less popular event with a smaller field is often an easier medal than a headline one.
- Past tests from invitational tournaments are widely shared by the community and are the best practice material available.
