What National Personal Finance Challenge is

The National Personal Finance Challenge is a team quiz and case study competition covering earning income, spending, saving, investing, managing credit and managing risk. Teams of three or four compete through online rounds to state and then national level, where they present a personal financial plan for a fictional family to a panel of judges. It is free and the content is directly useful outside the competition.

How the competition works

Covers six knowledge areas of personal finance: earning income, spending, saving, investing, managing credit and managing risk.

Eligibility notes

Teams of three or four with a teacher coach, registered through a state affiliate of the Council for Economic Education.

Is National Personal Finance Challenge right for you?

Experience needed
None. The content is standard personal finance curriculum and free study material is published.
Time commitment
A few weeks of study plus practice for the case study round if you advance.
What you actually do
Online rounds are knowledge questions. At nationals you receive a fictional family's financial situation and build and present a plan for them to judges.

A good fit if

  • You want content that is genuinely useful regardless of the result
  • Your school teaches personal finance
  • You want a free competition with cash prizes

Probably not for you if

  • Students who want investing analysis specifically, who should look at the Wharton competition

Common mistakes

  • Preparing only for the knowledge rounds. The national case study is a different skill and teams that advance are often unprepared for it.
  • Neglecting insurance and risk management, which is consistently the weakest area for student teams.

How to register

  1. Find a teacher willing to coach and register through your state affiliate.
  2. Study the five content areas: earning income, spending, saving, investing, managing credit and managing risk.
  3. Take the online qualifying rounds in the spring.
  4. State winners prepare for the case study format used at nationals, which is different from the online rounds.
