Eligible grades

Grade 11 or below as of 1 March of the application year, and not slated to graduate from high school or start full-time college before the contest. Contestants must still be a full-time student in grade 12 or below when the competition takes place.

You apply in grade 11 or below but compete in the following autumn, which is why the second condition exists.

An AMC 10 or AMC 12 score above the year's cutoff

Why: Selection is by AMC score, with cutoffs set separately for each exam after applications close. There is no essay or interview, so the AMC score is effectively the application.

Free to attend for selected studentsThere is no application or participation fee, but contestants are responsible for their own travel, hotel and food for the weekend. MIT provides a list of possible places to stay. Budget for the trip, not the entry.

Highly competitiveNational-level field. Expect months of structured work, and usually a coach or a strong team.

Prizes

$100,000 in monetary prizes in total, including a $50,000 first prize. Recent structure: $20,000 second, $10,000 third, $4,000 each for fourth and fifth, $2,000 sixth, and $1,000 for the next group, spread across the top 14 contestants including ties. A separate $2,000 Youth Prize goes to the top scorer in grade 9 or below, and a Youth Prize winner is still judged against the full field for the main placements.A substantial cash prize pool with awards down through the top finishers, plus the Math Prize Olympiad for top scorers.
