- Individual or team · Teams are scored on either the top 5 or the top 3 scores in each contest. A 5-score team is limited to 10 students on its roster and a 3-score team to 6. A student may only be a member of a single team, and after Contest #1 a student cannot change teams.

- Per team, per division. From ACSL's own registration page: the first team in a division is $175, or $125 for the Elementary Division; additional teams in a division are $150 each, or $100 each for Elementary. Separately, there is a $35 per student registration fee to take part in the Finals.A third-party guide quotes lower figures of $150 and $100 for first teams; ACSL's own page is higher, so budget from ACSL. The Finals fee is charged only if a student is invited, via a payment link in the invitation email.

What ACSL is
ACSL runs a season of four short contests taken at school through the year. Each contest pairs a written section on computer science theory (number systems, Boolean algebra, data structures, recursion, assembly concepts) with a programming problem you solve in your own time. Divisions run from Elementary through Intermediate, Junior and Senior, which makes it one of the few programming competitions that genuinely scales down to primary and middle school.
How the competition works
Four contests over the academic year, administered online through the HackerRank platform. In the upper divisions each contest is a 30-minute, six-question short answer test plus a programming problem to solve in 72 hours, using Python, C++ or Java. Topics cover Number Systems, Boolean Algebra, Digital Electronics and other fundamentals. The advisor chooses when to administer each contest within its window.
Eligibility notes
Divisions are by ability as much as grade. Senior is open to all high school students; Junior is aimed at grade 9 and below; Intermediate and Elementary serve middle and primary school.
How to register
- Ask a computer science or maths teacher to register your school on acsl.org.
- Choose the division that fits your experience rather than only your grade.
- Study the published topic list for each contest, which ACSL announces in advance.
- Sit each written contest at school and submit the programming problem by its deadline.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a strong programmer?
No. Half of each contest is written theory, and the Elementary and Intermediate divisions assume very little programming. ACSL is one of the few computing competitions that works as a genuine first contest.
Can I enter without a school?
ACSL is organised around school registrations. Contact ACSL directly about home school or club participation options.
